I enjoyed this conversation very much. Both Aaron Renn and Rod Dherer have had a profound impact on my outlook and hopes for my church. Thank you very much gentlemen.

A restoration of belief in the immaterial, non-emperical realities of our being is a hopeful sign. But it does signal a potential change in what to emphasize in Christianity when communicating with non-christians (and even to Christians). However, much of Christianity has spent so long fighting with and trying to appeal to materialistic empiricist it will certainly take time to retrain the instincts. The way into the heart is probably not through attempting to brute force the intellect.

I find it ironic that Aaron is enchanted with enhancement but eschews the belief in a literal 6-day creation and young earth because it is not scientific.

If my recollection is correct, Houellebecq's character wanted to believe but couldn't. It's not a question of his refusal but of his inability to believe. Big difference.
