Stephen Eide is my former colleague at the Manhattan Institute, where he’s a Senior Fellow who studies homelessness and mental illness. He has an essay in the new issue of National Affairs about the particular challenges of helping the homeless and others who reside at the very bottom of our society.
He joins me this week to discuss this timely matter, which is in the public consciousness because of the very visible homeless populations in many cities.
Eide’s article hits on a number of points related to gender. The vast majority of street homeless and others in similar straits are men, whereas the majority of the social service workers are women. And the programs to help these folks have a very therapeutic approach designed more to appeal to women than men. He proposes an alternative approach that would better appeal to men’s personalities.
